November Birthstone: Topaz

The November Birthstone is Topaz!

{Image Source}

Topaz is a gemstone available in a rich rainbow of colors. Prized for several thousand years in antiquity, all yellow gems in antiquity were called topaz. Often confused with citrine quartz (yellow) and smoky quartz (brown), quartz and topaz are separate and unrelated mineral species. The most prized color of topaz is called Imperial topaz after the Russian Czars of the 1800s and features a magnificent orange body color with pinkish undertones. Topaz also comes in yellow, pink, purple, orange, and the many popular blue tones. {Info Source}

This selection of gems from Ouro Prêto, Brazil, and Russia’s Ural Mountains, displays the golden orange to pinkish red color range of precious topaz. The gems range from 7.61 to 14.33 carats in size.
Many consumers know topaz as simply an inexpensive blue gem. They’re surprised to learn that its blue color is hardly ever natural: It’s almost always caused by treatment. They might also be surprised to know that topaz has so many more colors to offer gem lovers, including pinks and purples that rival the finest fancy sapphires. {Info Source}

Topaz crystals are typically elongated, with grooves parallel to their lengths. For this reason, they’re commonly cut into long oval or pear shapes. These crystals show orange, pink, and brown colors. – Eric Welch/GIA

What We Love This Fall: Colored Stone Rings.

Are you loving colored stones this Fall!? At SES we are really digging the colored stones we are seeing EVERYWHERE! Whether it’s on the red carpet or around your town, I’m sure you’ve noticed this beautiful trend.

Colored stones seen on some beautiful celebs fingers…

Clockwise from top left: Halle Berry’s emerald engagement ring, Blake Lively’s pink diamond, Elizabeth Hurley’s sapphire beauty, Jessica Simpson’s ruby.

Elizabeth Hurley’s sapphire stone both represents a favorite gem of the British royalty. The ruby on Jessica Simpson’s ring likely represents her July birthday. Who wouldn’t love the pink diamond on Blake’s left hand & Halle’s 4-carat emerald comes from an old, “closed-down mine in Muzo, Colombia and the color is perfect,” jeweler Robert Mazlo said after the pair’s engagement in 2012. “The balance between the blue and the yellow in the green in that stone is perfect.” {info source}

What colored stone rings does SES have to offer, you ask!? See some gorgeous option below.

Emerald Cut Emerald and Trapezoid Diamond Ring with Pave Shank: 33013

Cushion Sapphire & Round Diamond Pave Ring: 30078

Oval Ruby and Diamond Ring with Baguettes: 10641

October Birthstone: Opal & Tourmaline

It’s officially October and that means it’s time to highlight the October Birthstone!

There are two in October: Tourmaline which stands for Strength & Opal which stands for Hope.

Tourmaline has become a favorite gemstone because it comes in a variety of colors and can be suited to almost anyone’s taste.

Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone.  These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized.

One multi-color variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge.  Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA. Info source here.

The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning “to see a change (of color).”  Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue.

An opal’s beauty is the product of contrast between its color play and its background.  Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary strata. Through time and nature’s heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance. Info source here.
