October Birthstone: Opal & Tourmaline

It’s officially October and that means it’s time to highlight the October Birthstone!

There are two in October: Tourmaline which stands for Strength & Opal which stands for Hope.

Tourmaline has become a favorite gemstone because it comes in a variety of colors and can be suited to almost anyone’s taste.

Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone.  These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized.

One multi-color variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge.  Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA. The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning “to see a change (of color).”  Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue.

An opal’s beauty is the product of contrast between its color play and its background.  Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary strata. Through time and nature’s heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance. Info source here.

Yellow Summer Styles

Well, as of two days ago, summer is officially here!

Pearls might be the birthstone for June, but we think that you all should be wearing something that sparkles and shines under the sizzling, scorching, summer sun.

–>What could be more apropos than yellow diamonds?!

White diamonds are graded on a D (colorless) to Z (light color) scale, but yellow diamonds are graded as “Fancy”– from Fancy Light to Fancy Vivid Yellow.  Just as a white diamond’s color grade effects the price of the diamond, all the more so does a yellow diamond’s color effect its price and appearance.

Most importantly, yellow diamonds add a splash of classy (and fancy!) color to any summer ensemble.

Yellow, or White?

Far more surprising then their actual engagement, is the Neil Lane engagement ring that fiance, actor Liam Hemsworth, picked out for pop star sensation Miley Cyrus.

The 3.5ct, antique (from the late 19th century!) cushion-cut center stone is set in a 18k yellow gold mounting, belying Cyrus’ 19 years of age.

Celebrity engagements and marriages have long been a Hollywood trend (no matter how brief), so it is no shocker that Cyrus and Hemsworth have jumped on the bandwagon.  In doing so, perhaps Cyrus has created a more permanent trend–among bridal jewelry purchasers, white gold has been much more prominent than yellow (according to The Knot, 73% of buyers purchased rings in white gold). Will her decision make brides-to-be stop and consider yellow gold?

To learn more about yellow gold, check out our education page!

Want to get a heads start on this potentially new trend? Just let us know! All of our styles are available in yellow gold as well as white!

–>gold.org calls yellow gold, “warm, rich, and subtle – the ultimate in precious metals.”

A Diamond Jubliee!

HRH, Wearing the Queen Victoria Collet Necklace

Move over Kate, it’s Queen Elizabeth’s turn in the spotlight!

From pop concerts and fireworks, to parades and an 1000-boat flotilla, the three day event marking the 60th year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, was truly a royal event.

Though she stuck mainly to pearl jewelry over the weekend celebrations, the official Diamond Jubilee portrait showcases something much more sparkly– the Queen Victoria Collet Necklace, which contains twenty-nine collet set diamonds weighting over 160ctw, and includes the famed “Lahore Diamond” at 22.48cts!

While you might be hard-pressed to find something quite like these royal jewels, we have plenty of diamond necklaces to complete your Diamond Jubilee look!

All About Emeralds

We’ve blogged about the growing popularity of emeralds in the past, but as they are the birthstone for May, we think they deserve another post!

The myth and lore surrounding emeralds has been around for centuries.  Aristotle is said to have believed that emeralds can increase a person’s importance, settle litigation and prevent epilepsy (among other things).

Women from Cleopatra to Elizabeth Taylor, have found emeralds equally as enchanting, if not for their supposed powers, then for their unequalled beauty.

So, to all you May babies, SES is here to help you flaunt your stunning birthstone.  From bracelets and earrings, to rings and necklaces, you can count on us to deck you out in the gems you deserve to wear!

To learn more about emeralds, please check out our education page!
