Far more surprising then their actual engagement, is the Neil Lane engagement ring that fiance, actor Liam Hemsworth, picked out for pop star sensation Miley Cyrus.
The 3.5ct, antique (from the late 19th century!) cushion-cut center stone is set in a 18k yellow gold mounting, belying Cyrus’ 19 years of age.
Celebrity engagements and marriages have long been a Hollywood trend (no matter how brief), so it is no shocker that Cyrus and Hemsworth have jumped on the bandwagon. In doing so, perhaps Cyrus has created a more permanent trend–among bridal jewelry purchasers, white gold has been much more prominent than yellow (according to The Knot, 73% of buyers purchased rings in white gold). Will her decision make brides-to-be stop and consider yellow gold?

HRH, Wearing the Queen Victoria Collet Necklace
Move over Kate, it’s Queen Elizabeth’s turn in the spotlight!
From pop concerts and fireworks, to parades and an 1000-boat flotilla, the three day event marking the 60th year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, was truly a royal event.
Though she stuck mainly to pearl jewelry over the weekend celebrations, the official Diamond Jubilee portrait showcases something much more sparkly– the Queen Victoria Collet Necklace, which contains twenty-nine collet set diamonds weighting over 160ctw, and includes the famed “Lahore Diamond” at 22.48cts!
While you might be hard-pressed to find something quite like these royal jewels, we have plenty of diamond necklaces to complete your Diamond Jubilee look!

We’ve blogged about the growing popularity of emeralds in the past, but as they are the birthstone for May, we think they deserve another post!
The myth and lore surrounding emeralds has been around for centuries. Aristotle is said to have believed that emeralds can increase a person’s importance, settle litigation and prevent epilepsy (among other things).
Women from Cleopatra to Elizabeth Taylor, have found emeralds equally as enchanting, if not for their supposed powers, then for their unequalled beauty.
So, to all you May babies, SES is here to help you flaunt your stunning birthstone. From bracelets and earrings, to rings and necklaces, you can count on us to deck you out in the gems you deserve to wear!

Much has happened since last year’s highly-anticipated royal wedding, and throughout it all, former commoner Kate Middleton, has truly proven her own.
In fact, Duchess was not the only title bestowed upon her. Kate was also named “Hat Person of the Year” by the Headwear Association, as well as appearing on numerous “best dressed” lists. There is no disputing that she deserved all honors!
While tiaras might not have become trendy headgear for us commoners, Kate has, with the help of the Princess Di ring, increased the popularity of sapphire jewels. And of course, here at SES we embrace such trends!
The only question that remains is what Prince William will give his wife on such an important occasion as a first year wedding anniversary. While a traditional UK first anniversary gift is cotton, we think Prince William should nix that and go straight for the jewels…maybe some more sapphires to accompany that ring? I guess we will just have to wait and see…
In the meantime, if you are looking for some royally beautiful jewelry, be sure to check out our selection of color rings here!
After seven years and six kids, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have decided that it’s time to make it official. And the ring that Pitt designed for Jolie certainly makes a statement!
Created by LA jeweler Robert Procop, the reportedly 16ctw ring features emerald-cut diamonds, set in platinum, which is estimated to be worth around $500,000.
Clearly, some things are worth waiting for!

According to this JCK online article, the price of gold is projected to hit-and surpass-$2000 per ounce this year. High demand from Central Banks, in addition to the Eurozone debt crisis, contribute to this expectation.
It is, perhaps, for this reason that many consumers, who previously would not consider platinum due to its price, are now seeing it as an attractive option. As this article found, retailers are finding it easier to sell the platinum option to their customers. Since the prices are so close, consumers are recognizing that the quality of platinum is perhaps a more worthwhile investment.
On the other side, there are many consumers who do not keep up with current metal prices, and are unaware of the price similarity. Perhaps if more were aware, platinum would become the metal of choice.
